Anticipation is high for the return of the Japanese Film Festival to cinemas in the Philippines. Featuring films of various genres, the festival will also be screened in theaters across Manila, Baguio, Iloilo, Cebu, and Davao. Scheduled for February, the Japanese Film Festival highlights the central theme of ‘Nostalgia.’

The festival, known for its rich 27-year history, has also faced difficulties, having been impacted by the pandemic. As the festival announces its comeback to the big screens, the entries for this festival encompass various genres suitable for audiences from children to adults.

On a related note, Yojiro Tanaka, Deputy Director of the Japan Foundation, Manila, emphasizes the central theme for this year, centered around ‘Nostalgia.’

“For this year’s selection we decided on the theme, ‘Nostalgia’. We chose films that will make our audience feel nostalgic and remember their own fond memories and feeling”, said Tanaka.

This Year’s Film Entries

The announcement of the classic anime ‘Slam Dunk’ gracing Philippine theaters has sparked a wave of excitement among fans, creating a nostalgic buzz that transcends the decades. The festival, eager to resume its screenings in theaters after the several set back caused by the pandemic, centers its theme around ‘Nostalgia.’ It doesn’t solely focus on entries related to nostalgia but also emphasizes the desire to hold the festival in theaters.

“But ‘Nostalgia’ is not only about our lineups. I think it is also about the experience of coming to the movie theater itself”, Deputy Director Tanaka expressed.

Since the Pandemic happened, he was keen on highlighting how we were settling to confine at our homes to experience films. And that the magic in cinema, is truly incomparable.

With a wide variety of films aimed at pleasing Filipino movie-goers anew, they are set to hopefully expand the market by offering a selection of movies targeting different demographics.

“We hope that the wide range of films will entertain long-time festival goers and those who are already fans of Japanese films. We also welcome newcomers to enjoy Japanese films and the Japanese Film Festival”, he added.

Admission is free for all screenings. Guests can simply visit their preferred participating theaters and queue before each screening of their chosen movie. Seats will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. 

 

JFF kicks-off in Manila at the Shangri-La Red Carpet Cinema from February 1 to 11 and continues into the regions in SM Cinemas in Cebu, Baguio, Iloilo, and Davao.

 

JFF screens in SM Seaside City Cebu from February 16 to 25, and in SM City Baguio, Iloilo, and Davao from February 23 to March 3.

 

The festival will also have a special run at the UPFI Film Center in University of the Philippines Diliman from February 22 to March 2.

 

JFF is also supported by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, JT International (Philippines) Inc., and the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines.
