MNL, PH – When you think of world-class Filipino talent, one of the names that always comes up is Jed Madela. Jed’s flawless executions of high notes and “birits” have made him an iconic name in the Philippine music and showbiz scene. His music transcends time as his hits stay relevant even to the younger generations with one of his biggest hits “Forevermore” being known to be the “Airport Love Song” that became a viral trend in the Philippines. As he celebrates two decades of his decorated career, Jed sits down with ZEEN Magazine to give us a deeper look at who he is behind the glitz and glam.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Jed’s humble beginnings started in his hometown in Iloilo City. He was a singer in a band where he was enjoying his time being a silent serenader and doing what he loves to do which is to sing. He always adored singing but surprisingly, he never dreamed of becoming the musical icon he is today. However, fate had other plans for this future singing sensation, especially when he started competing in singing competitions.

“I never dreamt of being a singer. I loved to sing but it was always a hobby. I never thought that this would be the job I have at the end of the day.”

WORLD CHAMPION

One of the key journeys that recognized Jed as one of the best musical talents of the country would be all the local and international competitions he decided to join and luckily won. Jed joined multiple contests but the most nerve-wracking and prominent one would be competing in the World Championship of Performing Arts better known as WCOPA.

“I was actually a bit nervous to join WCOPA. I had to make sure that I would give my all and hopefully win because if I came home without an award, that would say a lot about my musical talent.”

Jed knew that joining a competition this big could make or break his musical reputation in the Philippines. Luckily with the right preparation and Jed’s natural talent, he was able to take home the title – the first Filipino to do so. This garnered him more respect and excitement from the people around him.

“When I won WCOPA, it did change things for me. People were more excited to have me on their shows since it is different when you’re a Filipino who won on the international stage. Filipinos take a lot of pride in people who win in international competitions while representing the country.”

STAYING POWER

Despite having multiple awards and rising to fame, Jed recognizes that at the core, he is a person with his own emotions and feelings. Jed shared with us there was a time when he found validation in others more than himself, and at some point, this made him question if he was still for the industry.

“To be honest, I am a people pleaser. I like pleasing people and giving them the performances they expect from me. There came a time that every time I would go off stage, despite the cheers, applause, and standing ovations, I would only believe I did a good job when someone tells me that I did a good job. I would need to ask “Okay ba ako?” or “Did I do well?” and have someone affirm me.”

Because of this, there was even a time that Jed questioned if he was still relevant to the industry and if singing was still the career path for him. He even said a few years back that he felt neglected.

“There was a time when there was a shift in the industry where being a balladeer wasn’t the “uso”. During this time, I felt that maybe I was not what the people wanted anymore and people were no longer going to want me again. It made me think that maybe this is where my career ends.”

Luckily, Jed persevered and was able to soon realize that he was surrounded by people who cared about him. He soon discovered that what matters is the quality of the people that he was surrounded by, which are his family, friends, team, and supporters. To have these people tell him that his songs were the soundtrack of his life has been more than enough to keep him going in his career.

“I have people come up to me and tell me that “ay yun kanta mo, pinapakinggan ko yan noong heart broken ako” or “Yan yun wedding song namin ng asawa ko”. Whenever I hear these comments, it means so much to me. I realized that I don’t need a lot of people around me, I just need people who really believe in me to keep me going.”

ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

The concept of his songs being the soundtrack to his supporters’ lives is the main inspiration for Jed for his upcoming concert happening on December 10, 8 PM at The Theatre at Solaire as he celebrates his amazing 20-year career. He’s excited to be performing his greatest hits in this concert titled ‘Jed Madela: Here and Now: The 20th Anniversary Concert’, where he will also be performing alongside his surprise guests; his two musical idols who are icons in the Philippines music industry.

VISUAL ARTIST

Outside of music, Jed truly is still a creative at heart. He shared with us that with his parent’s upbringing in Iloilo, he learned to be resourceful with what he was given which resulted in him discovering his talent for painting toys called “VUDU”. Aside from customizing toys, Jed also brings his artistic visions to life in paintings.

“We were never spoiled at home. Our parents always taught us that we had to work hard for the things we wanted. That meant I had to be resourceful at home and make the most out of the toys that I had That’s where I discovered painting on my toys to make them unique.”

GOING OUT OF THE BOX

With a stunning 20-year career under Jed’s belt, he is excited to see where this trailblazing world-class talent brings his music prowess next.

“I want to explore more, I want to do things that would not make me feel like I am boxed up, na hindi ako makagalaw,  I don’t want to feel that I’m being held in the neck.  Who knows, it can be theatre, broadway, movies, even business, you’ll never know.”

From a humble singing enthusiast from Iloilo to a world-class singer, Jed is living proof that the things meant for us will find their way to manifest in our lives.
